Cardinal Hockey Remembers Jim Swears
BRHS Cardinal Hockey supporter, James "Jimmy" Swears passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2007 after a long illness. A life-long Big Rapids resident, Swears advocated for hockey in the area, supporting area youth, BRHS and Ferris State hockey teams. Jim was recognized in 2005 with the "Tami Everin Memorial Booster Award" for excellence in contributing to and supporting the Cardinal Hockey program.
Although a spinal disorder robbed him of the use of his legs, he and his electric wheelchair which he nicknamed "Scooter" were frequently spotted cheering on Cardinal Hockey at home games, along with his wife, Deb. Their son, Zack, is a BRHS hockey alumnus.
The Big Rapids Hockey Boosters credit Jim for providing the inspiration and direction for one of their most successful fundraisers, the annual Big Rapids High School Hockey golf outing held each year in June. His leadership for this event has helped create a legacy for the Big Rapids High School Hockey program.
Jim was well known in Big Rapids for his interest in the community. A special project has been the Riverwalk, an access-for-all recreational path that follows the Muskegon River in Big Rapids.
Jin was an inspiration to all around him. His compassion and generous nature were well-known, as well as his devotion to his wife and son. He will be fondly remembered by the Cardinal Hockey family.
